blowing into a special bag of chips designed to detect alcohol, a novelty being used as a promotion by a popular snack brand, isn't a reliable way to determine whether a person is fit to drive, maricopa county attorney bill montgomery said wednesday.

tostitos, a popular brand of tortilla chips, has recently touted a breathalyzer bag that helps users know if they have consumed alcohol and should find a designated driver for the ride home. the bag, which is not available to the general public, is being promoted as part of the upcoming super bowl, a day when eating and drinking are celebrated as much as the game.

even though frito-lay, the company that makes tostitos, isn't selling the limited-edition bags, the company is instead giving out $10 uber credits with the purchase of a bag of tostitos that includes a code for the credit, usa today reported. the company is making 25,000 of the credits available.

as part of the promotion, the company has shown a promotional video showing the bags, which a person can blow into when empty. if the outside of the bag shows green, alcohol is not detected. if it shows red, alcohol is detected and the person is advised to seek a ride.

montgomery cautioned that products designed to help determine sobriety can serve a purpose, but are not meant to have the final say.

"at the point you are blowing into a bag of chips, you’re already questioning your ability to drive sober. make the right choice and find a sober driver to get you home safe," said montgomery. “any product you can use to test your sobriety should be used only to raise awareness of impaired driving. if someone decides to drink and drive they need to understand they will be held fully accountable."

according to the frito-lay website, tostitos has partnered with mothers against drunk driving to promote safe driving for the 2017 super bowl. the madd website states that, in order to receive the uber credit, fans must enter a tostitos tortilla chips upc code from their chip bag into the uber app.

montgomery says law enforcement across the county will increase efforts to monitor potential dui suspects this weekend, looking for any signs of impaired driving. violators face jail time and fines, he added.

arizona is a no-tolerance state for duis, meaning you can be arrested with a blood-alcohol content higher than the legal limit of 0.08 percent. there are three types of duis, each taking into account bac levels and other factors, such as a previous conviction or whether any minors were in the vehicle. the more serious the dui, the more you can expect to pay.
