president donald trump

president donald trump speaks during a joint news conference with british prime minister theresa may in the east room of the white house on jan. 27, 2017.(p o: ap)

the media: press conference.

who said it: donald trump.

title: president of the united states.

party: republican.

the comment: "i happened to be in scotland at turnberry, cutting a ribbon when brexit happened, and we had a vast amount of press there. and i said 'brexit' — this was the day before, you probably remember — i said 'brexit is going to happen,' and i was scorned in the press for making that prediction. i was scorned."

the forum: a joint news conference at the white house with british prime minister theresa may on jan. 27.

what we're looking at: whether trump was in scotland at his turnberry golf course the day before the "brexit" vote and if, at that event, he predicted "leave" would win.

analysis: at the joint news conference with may on friday, trump claimed he had predicted the united kingdom would choose to leave the european union the day before the vote, while he was in scotland for a ribbon-cutting at his luxury golf course.

the comment e in response to a reporter's question about how trump would keep his promise to help the united kingdom with a trade deal.

though the president publicly predicted the u.k.'s exit from the european union in march, he did not restate his position in scotland the day before it happened. the vote took place june 23, and the then-presidential candidate visited turnberry for the ribbon-cutting the following day.

the day before the vote, june 22, trump was in new york, where he spoke about his opponent, hillary clinton.

a glasgow, scotland, resident tweeted a picture of trump's plane flying over the city on the morning of june 24.

a few hours later, trump tweeted that he had "just arrived" in scotland.

later, trump tweeted about his visit and praised u.k. voters' decision to leave the eu.

in his speech at turnberry, trump didn't predict brexit would happen because the outcome was already known. trump did, however, remind the crowd that he had foreseen the result of the vote and predicted that the uk would not be the last country to leave the eu.

"i could see it happening," he said.

bottom line: in his joint news conference with may, trump falsely said he had predicted brexit would happen while visiting his golf course in scotland on the day before the vote. trump arrived in scotland the day after the brexit vote. he did, however, correctly predict in march that u.k. voters would choose to leave the eu.

the rating: one star: mostly false.
