vice president mike pence broke a 50-50 tie in the u.s. senate to confirm betsy devos as the new u.s. secretary of education. devos, a proponent of school choice, was a controversial nominee. (dwight adams/indystar) wochit

after a 50-50 tie in the senate, vice president mike pence cast the deciding vote to confirm betsy devos as education secretary.

her primary and perhaps only qualification is that she is married to the billionaire heir to the amway fortune and has contributed millions and millions and even more millions of dollars to the republican party.

during her hearings sen. bernie sanders said, “there is a growing fear that ... we are moving toward what some would call an oligarchic society, where a small number of very wealthy billionaires control, to some degree, our economic and political life.”

he wanted to know if devos’s family had contributed as much as $200 million to republicans over time.

"that's possible," she said.

during her hearings, devos seemed to have little knowledge about how the education department works. she had little understanding of the laws that, for example, protect students with disabilities. there were many other instances when she seemed not to have a clue about policy or procedure, including having guns in school.

her only qualification appeared to be having written a lot of big fat checks. (particularly to the republican senators who would vote for her.) even the billionaire charter school advocate eli broad said, "i believe she is unprepared and unqualified for the position."

but now, thanks to trump and pence, she’s in.

apparently, draining the swamp was only a prequel to refilling it -- with dollars.
