five kids rescued after falling through ice on central park pond

five kids in search of a cool selfie got an icy dose of reality monday when they plunged through the ice-covered pond at central park and into frigid water.

the youngsters, ages 10 to 15, had to be fished from the small lake after venturing onto what they mistakenly thought was solid ice near fifth ave. and 59th st., officials said.

firefighters and cops pulled the kids to safety just before 5:50 p.m. — when the air in central park was still an unseasonable 49 degrees.

two good samaritans who jumped to the children’s rescue were also helped to safety.

spotting a ladder on the ground nearby, the teen and her mom rushed to extend it across the cracking ice to the flailing kids, she said.

“(they) were breaking the ice on the other side” of the pond, said maia, who is visiting new york from paraguay.

“they were playing down there. they were taking a selfie and they all went down together ... i was very scared.”

all seven people were treated at the scene for hypothermia, according to fdny deputy chief john schof.

three fdny divers from rescue 1 and rescue 4 scoured the dark and murky 18-foot depths for roughly an hour, to make sure there were no additional victims.

“we’re confident we got everyone out,” said schof.

he didn’t have an exact temperature of the water but was sure “it was pretty cold.”

most of the pond had a solid 2- to 3-inch layer of ice over it — “not thick enough to hold them up,” schof added.

“they were just being kids, i guess,” schof said, although he added that “going on the ice is not a good idea,” especially following two days of nearly 60-degree temps.

after being treated pondside for minor hypothermia, two shivering victims went to new york presbyterian hospital weill cornell, three went to bellevue hospital and two to lenox hill hospital, officials said.

queens resident mervin morris, 33, who works in theater, said the teens looked frightened and frozen as cops hustled them off for treatment.

“stretchers kept passing with teens on them ... i saw the first kid, he was crying up there,” said morris.

“they were asking him questions. he kept saying he was cold, very cold, of course,” morris added.
