melbourne storm have suffered their first major recruiting blow of 2017 with star new zealand international tohu harris signing a four-year deal with the new zealand warriors.

harris joined the storm aged 16 and developed into one of the most consistent and ver ile forwards in the nrl all while missing just one senior game since his storm debut in round one of 2013.

the 25-year-old was one of the storm's key re-signing priorities but the lure of moving his young family home to new zealand and the chance to work under warriors and former national team coach stephen kearney saw him accept the four-year deal which begins in the 2018 season.

harris, who has played 103 games for the storm, told the warriors website he was happy to be moving closer to his family in hastings, new zealand.

"i've had a great time with the storm and i owe them so much for what they've done for me," harris said.

"coming home to play for the warriors is a fantastic opportunity, though.

"the club has a great roster with so many kiwi boys there and being back in new zealand closer to family is a big attraction.

"i also have great respect for mooks [kearney] through my time with him in the kiwis and i look forward to working with him again."

storm football manager frank ponissi said harris would be missed.

"tohu has been a valuable member of our squad for the last four seasons and before that three years in our national youth competition squad having signed as a 16-year-old," ponissi said.

"while we are very disappointed to lose him, he has committed to the playing group his desire to finish his time at the storm on a winning note."

in past seasons harris has filled in across a number of positions for the storm from five-eighth to front row and last season he began to make a spot in the second row his own after replacing ryan hoffman, who was also signed by the warriors.
