'13 reasons why' criticized by suicide prevention groups

hannah baker's suicide could lead viewers to follow in her footsteps. at least that's what several suicide prevention groups believe after the fictional teenager's suicide was depicted in the popular netflix series "13 reasons why." "there is a great concern that i have ... that young people are going to over-identify with hannah in the series, and we actually may see more suicides as a result of this television series," executive director for the non-profit suicide awareness voices of education (save), dan reidenberg, told abc news. "i've heard from others that are really concerned because it's so sensational and so graphic that they're worried about the copy-cat effect of suicide," he added.‘13 reasons’ to tune in on netflix reidenberg also noted tha...

surprising lessons on teen suicide from '13 reasons why'

trigger warning: this series contains potentially triggering scenes involving suicide and sexual assaultbinge watching on netflix. we all do it. we all give in to the temptation of watching a series all day, without even having to click a button for the next episode to roll on. it occurred to me this weekend however, that 13 reasons why might be more than just a guilty pleasure, and that it might even be a voice for issues that desperately need more attention. nevertheless, i entered into this thirteen part series with skepticism. for one thing, having read the book, i was not expecting a realistic story line, nor was i expecting top quality cinematography or acting. for those of you who do not know the premise, it's about the reasons why a 17-year-old girl commits suicide. needless to sa.

‘13 reasons’ sparks criticism of teen suicide depiction

13 reasons why's suicide scene is hard to watch - but that's the point

i watched 13 reasons why unnaturally quickly - within 24 hours i was over half way through the series. i was hooked, like everyone else who has watched it. i also have an opinion about the suicide and rape scenes, like everyone else who has watched it. there are some who view the show as triggering and suggest that vulnerable people abstain from watching or watch with caution - something i think is advisable. there is no doubt the show could be triggering. however, by now, the plot of the show is well known (there is only so long you can avoid spoilers) and at the beginning of the show the producers issued warnings and gave details of suicide helplines - something i would hardly class as irresponsible or dangerous.i understand that people are especially worried about the effect the show wi

'thirteen reasons why' and the dangerous use of suicide as a dramatic device

thirteen reasons why, with its graphic portrayal of suicide and storyline concerning a dead protagonist given a haunting, vengeful voice from beyond the grave, has sparked an ethical debate: do the benefits of starting conversations about this most difficult of subjects outweigh the risks of inspiring copycat deaths? stigma and the difficulty of starting a conversation about mental health are crucially important issues, particularly when the media still tends to couch its reportage in terms of "confession" and in the current climate of austerity, a place on a waiting list is the most likely offer to someone who asks for help. however, it is questionable whether a series which shows a young person committing suicide after sexual assault, then after her death talking to her tormentors and ..

regional differences in suicide rates may shed light on more effective preventio

people end their lives for multiple complex and interwoven reasons, but it's deeply troubling that those living in some areas of britain are more likely to die by suicide than others.new data released today by the office of national statistics revealed that 5,688 people ended their life by suicide in great britain in 2016, a fall of 3.4%. this fall is hugely welcome given the devastating impact of suicide on families and communities. however, we cannot be complacent. one death by suicide is still one too many and behind the overall fall lie some troubling national and regional variations. although the rate of suicides in england has fallen considerably, and slightly in wales, there has been a small, but concerning, rise in scotland. in england, the south west had the highest suicide rate .

death by suicide doesn't erase a life

on march 23, 2017, amy bleuel died at the age of 31. she died by suicide.many people die by suicide. in the united states alone, an average 121 people take their own lives each day. what makes amy's death stand out was her work in suicide prevention. she was the founder of project semicolon, a mental health advocacy and suicide prevention group dedicated to offering hope and love to people struggling with mental illness, suicide, addiction, and self-injury. the semicolon was chosen as their symbol because that punctuation mark is used when an author could have ended their sentence but chose not to. you are the author of your life, and you are encouraged to continue. this resulted in many people getting semi-colon tattoos over the last few years.sarah schuster, the author of the article wh.

suicide isn't just feeling like you want to die

suicide has been in the media a lot over the past few years, particularly very recently with some amazing, talented, seemingly 'happy' celebrities taking their own lives. but suicide is still hugely misunderstood.suicide isn't just simply, "i want to die!" and it certainly isn't 'the easy way out' or 'selfish', as many people still believe it to be.having had suicidal thoughts and made several serious attempts on my life i can assure you that it is not a spur of the moment thought or something taken lightly. in my case it was when i had reached a point where i felt nothing! i was numb. not sad. not upset. i was completely void of feeling and that is the scariest place to be.i had lost all hope. all of it. can you even imagine what that's like?i had a lovely home. family, friends...
